Best Sewing Machines for Quilting Features to Consider before Buying:

The modern sewing machines for quilting have more advanced features. In addition, many dealers are currently operating on the Internet. This explains why selecting and purchasing a machine is no longer a problem. As a quilting expert you should know what your needs are. Perhaps you want a portable quilting machine to use anywhere anytime. Further, you could be searching for an exclusive home use sewing machine.

Maybe you want to buy an electronic, a computerized or a manual sewing machine. These types of machines are available in the markets. Quilting sewing machines are numerous and you can hardly lack one that matches your tastes and preferences.

If you are budgeting for a brand new machine, the following tips and hints will guide you:

Consider the features of a new quilting sewing machine
There are many features you must consider before buying this type of a sewing machine. These include the following:

The most important thing is the needle position. A few machines enable the user to select the up or down needle position when the machines stop. You should hunt for a quilting machine with an automatic pivot feature. It will slightly raise the foot, with the needle in fabric, when you tap the power foot. This allows you to pivot the fabric. You can keep on controlling the fabric with your hands.

The Foot

Sewing machines for quilting have unique features that make them function smoothly. Look for a model, which has a quarter inch foot or one that is capable of moving the needle position to the left or right to set a seam. A suitable model should have a power foot that gives you many other options.
You could try the pricey free motion or walking foot styles. A machine that allows you to raise your presser foot with a knee lift lever is good. You do not have to stop using your hands. A few machines enable you to avoid using the foot pedal by pressing a button.

Threading features

A useful quilting machine allows you to stitch easily. You should make sure that a model has an automatic thread cutter for both top bobbin and top threads. It should also have an automatic needle threader and enable you to make straight and zigzag stitches. A thread has to feed perfectly if you are using a quilting machine. To ensure it, just go for a machine that has a large cone.

Arm space

An arm space, often-called throat has to be large if a quilting machine will help you make big quilts.

Accessories

All sewing machines have some useful accessories. These include extra bobbins, free motion foot, single-hole throat plate, software disks with patterns and so on.
If you are buying sewing machines for quilting for the first time, take your time to investigate the rest of the features. Above everything else follow these buying tips:

  • Visit the quilt shows- if you will buy a quilting machine this year; attend the quilt shows held during the autumn season. You can find great price deals, extra accessories, and advice.
  • Select your dealer thoroughly- a good sewing machine dealer will offer you a reasonable price and a warranty.
  • Choose your model wisely- some machine models are not the repairable locally and will cost you more money in future.

Examining Quilting History

If you’ve ever looked really closely at some of the fantastic quilting designs, you’ll know that there really is a lot of work that goes into each individual quilt. And if you’ve ever tried quilting yourself you’ll know that it isn’t as easy as it looks. So let’s have a look at quilting
history and where it all began.

Quilting history can actually be tracked back all the way to the 1600s. The first sign of quilting was actually dated back to the Egyptians in Egypt. It is stated that some of the pharoes actually wore quilted materials as clothes. There are statues that clearly show this was evident that have been discovered.

Next came the introduction of quilted clothing that contained three separate layers. This was used to keep warm during the very cold winter months. It was then discovered that this was a great material to be used on a bed at night.

In the 1800s quilting really became popular in the United States and there were many competitions created by women who really fell in love with the popular craft. Not much really changed in quilting history since then until the late 19th century. That’s when new easy techniques were created which actually saw quilting become less popular.

Again that changed in the 1960s where people wanted to start quilting again. People still
enjoy making quilts but because they have become so easy to create by the large corporations and the prices are so cheap, many people just decide to buy them rather than to go to the effort of creating their own.

Obviously this isn’t the case for everyone as people get a lot of enjoyment out of creating their own quilts. People like to create their own quilts and hand them down through the generations of their family to make great heirlooms.

Examining exactly what is quilting

Many people are confused at exactly what is quilting but are surprised to find out it has been around for centuries. It was originally used as a form of clothing to help people keep warm in winter. It was involved from sowing cloth together to form three different layers. This means the body can maintain its own temperature as it doesn’t lose much heat and also does not allow much of the cold to get in. Later on it became more
popular in households especially in America, where women used to create patchwork quilts and small pattern materials. These were quite often displayed on the wall or on the dining table. Many of them were actually
quite intricate designs and took quite a long time to make.

Due to the mass creation of quilts, the popularity of actually making them decreased over the years. We all know how easy it is nowadays to go out and buy a basic white quilt. They are measured on a scale of how warm
they are, which are called togs. They are actually very cheap to purchase these days which is why the art of making them really decreased in popularity.

That doesn’t mean to say that no one at all still makes them. There are literally thousands of people who get great enjoyment and satisfaction out of creating their own unique quilts. There is quite a large market of
buyers also who will readily pay for a quilt that has had a lot of work put into it. So when we look at exactly what is quilting, the answer is really a craft that is steadily beginning to become more popular all over
the world. Just look at the number of web sites that are devoted to quilting and you’ll soon realise that there are a lot of people who get great enjoyment from the craft.

How to Choose a Sewing Machine

This time, a sewing machine doesn’t only offer something that has one function only, but the usability offered is very diverse. Even in a single sewing machine, you can perform up to hundreds of stitches, embroidery fonts, and even certain images. This all cannot be separated from the times and modes that require speed and accuracy with a variety of models.

It is also tailored to the needs of your sewing purpose whether you want to perform basic-improvement and change, seasonal or daily projects, or quilting and embroidery. To suit the needs, you cannot do it arbitrarily.

It was difficult to work with an expert machine if you’re a beginner, nor vice versa.

For a beginner and intermediate, you should consider to purchase a sewing machine slightly more than the need, because your skills and interest will grow as long as you learn frequently.

There are two types of sewing machines, mechanical and electronic. Of course, there is a difference between them. On a mechanical sewing machine, you need to organize most of the controls manually by hand. Besides, this sewing machine has fewer seams and doesn’t do various sewing jobs.

It only has one or two types of basic stitches or general terms. However, the benefit of mechanical sewing machine is the price that is much more affordable in financial condition of the middle-down class.

On the other hand, an electronic sewing machine delivers exceptional range of facilities in the world of sewing machines.

It has touch pad controls and recommends the best stitch, settings, presser foot, and many more, based on the material. Even it provides a connection to sew table linens or blankets. But this sewing machine has more expensive price range.

Beside both of mechanical and electronic sewing machine, there is also an embroidery sewing machine which combines the sewing function with embroidery function.

This machine holds the ring under the needle and moves in a circle in four directions as sewing needles. You only need to press the start button, watch it, and change the thread color. All of the functions will be taken by a computer as an intermediary.

Independent dealers usually will let you try the sewing machine in their store. This will give you benefit as a buyer to know more about a product. If you can, try it with some fabric and customize it to your needs. If you need a sewing machine for sewing a shirt, then try it with another material, for example: cotton.

Save your order by finding out coupons online and ask about upcoming sales and deals, trade-in allowances, and interest-free financing. Don’t be shy to negotiate with the dealer to get the satisfaction of both parties.

It’s not a mistake that have to be recognized, but one way to get good deal.

Many of dealers offer in-store service. If they don’t do it, they will send you to a repair center or manufacturer. The warranty is needed for a sewing machine that you have purchased. Essentially, the entire purchase of sewing machine should be considered based on: the need for sewing machine, a trial before the ownership, warranty repair, and a good deal.

4 Main Types of Sewing Machines

There are actually many types of sewing machines. However, in this article I will only mention the 4 main one that you should really know about:

    1. Electric sewing machines

An electric sewing machine just what it sounds like… electric. It has a motor which you control with a foot pedal. They offer a range of speeds and you control the speed by how hard you press on the foot pedal. You control the size of the stitches with a dial that you turn.

    2. Computerized sewing machines

Computerized sewing machines are programmed to create a variety of stitches. You operate these high-tech machines with a touchpad. If that isn’t cool enough they are also capable of memorizing your old work so that you can do it again with the touch of a button. Another cool feature is that you can actually download programs from your personal computer. With a computerized sewing machine the possibilities are really endless.

    3. Overlocker machines

If you are looking for a professional appearance to your projects then an overlocker machine is probably for you. They trim while sewing in order to create a neat, professional look to your work. They also sew much faster than traditional machines.

    4. Manual sewing machines

You’ve probably seen these before but they are not really used anymore. They are mostly antiques and are kept as décor or in museums. They are the “mothers” of the modern sewing machines and are operated by a hand wheel.

The Benefits of Buying a Sewing Machine

Sewing is becoming lost as the years go on and everyone buys their clothes and other textiles from stores that have them shipped over from Asia or India. It is sad to see that it is dying out and it doesn’t have to! If you have an interest in sewing then run with it. An imperfect, homemade baby blanket for instance is infinitely better than a “perfect” store bought one!

Buy a sewing machine. You won’t regret it. Use my reviews as a guide and speak with friends and relatives about their machines. Ask them what they love (and don’t love) about them. It is a great way to gain information and also to bond with other sewing enthusiasts. After all, sewing has deep roots a communal activity. Just think of the quilting circles of old.

Sewing is a great way to save money from “up-cycling” old clothes, sewing your own blankets, quilts and pillow covers or creating adorable baby clothes. An initial investment in a sewing machine will provide you the opportunity to save hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the long run. Not to mention, sewing gives you the opportunity to get your creative juices flowing and can be a very relaxing hobby.

And, to be clear, it is not a hobby just for women. Plenty of men love to sew too and getting your sons or grandsons involved in sewing early will encourage them to be creative, orderly and to follow instructions. It is a great practice for any young child.

Sewing seems to be somewhat of a dying art. Few young women sew anymore and the skills involved with sewing have not been passed down through the generations like they used to be. Sewing is a valuable skill, however. It saves money, encourages creativity and can be a great way for mothers and grandmothers to bond with the young women (or men) in their families.

I love to sew because it gives me a chance to do something lovingly for my family. Fixing my husband’s shirts or hemming my daughters’ pants is a way for me to show them that I care. It also helps me to save money and be creative. I love repurposing old clothes into something new. Whether you want to learn to sew out of necessity or as a hobby, please do try it out! I promise you will be hooked in no time.

    Last Words

I hope you have learned something here and that you will take away that knowledge and use it to purchase a sewing machine… whether it’s your first or your twenty first. Whether you hope to become a fashion designer or just want to mend your kids’ soccer uniforms, sewing is a useful skill and the more you practice the more confident you will become.

Choosing a sewing machine is like choosing a friend. You want it to be the right one because you two will be spending a lot of time together. With that said, keep value in mind because it’s not always the most expensive machine with all of the bells and whistles that is the best match for you and your needs.

    Brother LS2125i sewing machine

December 7, 2019 by David Allen Leave a Comment

Brother LS2125i sewing machine was designed with beginners in mind and is geared toward people looking to mend their shirts or hem their pants. It can handle simple projects and nothing more. Although, for the price, that’s to be expected. If you’re looking for a top of the line machine, you are going to have to pay for it. This is not it.

I tested this out at home with some simple projects I had for my kids. I wanted to mend my son’s basketball shorts and add a few buttons to my daughter’s top… here is what I found:

    PROS of Brother LS2125i
This machine is as user-friendly as it is durable and it is a perfect beginner’s machine because of its simplicity of design. It can sew pretty much any materiall; silk, cotton, burlap, you name it. That’s always a bonus. It supports twin needle stitching function and had a left aligned straight stitch for top stitching

This is a great sewing machine for teaching a beginner or for your own first machine.

    Here’s why:

    • Simple to thread
    • Very simple to insert bobbin
    • Easy fill the bobbin.

If you are starting out with sewing, please take this advice. If you purchase a low cost machine you are going to have to pamper it a bit. You aren’t going to be able to give it a beating and expect it to continue to work well. The important thing is that you take care of this machine if you want it to last.

Oil your sewing machine once every few months. Change the needle depending on the material you are using. Buy a carrying case so that it will stay protected. This machine will hold up well if cared for properly.

    CONS of Brother LS2125i:

The tension can be problem and the thread will lock on top or under the fabric. If you are a beginner this can be frustrating and difficult to fix.

    Conclusion

So while it is inexpensive and user-friendly in the sense that it is relatively easy to get up and running it can be a pain to keep running. It’s durable but if you can’t get it to do what you want, you won’t be using it very often anyway.

It’s probably the BEST choice for a beginner but if you are an expert you would certainly want something with more features and options.

Brother XR9500PRW Limited Edition Project Runway Sewing Machine

December 7, 2019 by David Allen Leave a Comment

I really liked using Brother XR9500PRW. It’s nothing extravagant but it works well and it does what it says it will. I liked the Quick set bobbin, needle threader, and needle down position. I also really like that it has so many decorative stitches.

In reality, I may never use many of them but they’re still fun to have in my arsenal. Brother XR9500PRW is also super quiet… which I love. All of this at a pretty affordable price and from Brother which is really becoming a respected brand in the sewing world. I think this machine is just about the perfect machine for small projects or for teaching someone how to sew.

It’s got some flaw, which I will mention, but they are all pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.

    Pros of Brother XR9500PRW

    • This machine is quiet.
    • It has an adjustable needle position.
    • It has a drop in bobbin. Great feature.
    • It comes with a great selection of stitches.
    • It comes with quilting table which is nice for quilters… which I am not, however.
    • Multiple presser feet are included which always comes in handy and is nice to have.
    • Quick set bobbin. To me, his is a huge plus. You don’t have to hold the top thread while turning the hand wheel… such a pain. Instead, you just drop it in, thread through the tension spring, and cut the length with the attached cutter.

    Cons of Brother XR9500PRW:

    • No automatic thread cutter. This is something a lot of people do without so it isn’t a huge deal but it is worth mentioning.
    • The cover is not very quality… It is made of thin plastic. It would be fine to cover the machine and protect it from dust but wouldn’t really protect it from much.

    Conclusion

Brother XR9500PRW is a great beginner’s machine or a machine for quick fixes around the house. It does have its flaws but none of the flaws are so overwhelming or frustrating that a beginner would give up using it. I mean, sure, a nicer cover would be great but it isn’t really a deal breaker, is it.

The issues with the stitch sizes being a bit off would be a much bigger deal if you plan to use the machine for elaborate projects but for small projects, it’s fine. In general, this is the machine I would buy my teenage daughter to learn on or the machine I would keep around for quick jobs. I would not sew a prom dress with it… but that’s OK.

Brother CS5055PRW – Perfect for Beginners and Gift for Teenagers

December 7, 2019 by David Allen Leave a Comment

I had a friend try out this machine while teaching her teenage daughter to sew. I figured with it being a pretty basic model it would be a good test to see how it worked as an instructional tool.

My friend came back with some mixed feelings. Her daughter really loved the machine but had some hard times in the learning process.

If you are a beginner or are looking for a sewing machine for a beginner, then you may want to keep in mind that when trying to learn, ease of use is really important. No matter how much a person may want to learn to sew, a machine that makes the process tiresome and tedious will really suck the joy out of the whole thing. That’s why I love Brother CS5055PRW.Brother CS5055PRW

Its inexpensive price tag makes it a good choice for a beginner and this machine does have some advantages over other similar ones. However, this machine also has some pretty issues that are really easy to ignore.

    Pros of Brother CS5055PRW
It is significantly quieter than the average machine on the market. That’s a nice feature, for sure. I know that I hate a really loud machine so I always appreciate one that hums along without too much racket.

Easy bobbin placement and loading. It all sets up nicely and easily. It’s got some other issues (look below) but it does have that going for it.

Automatic threading mechanism works smoothly and efficiently.

It feels more solid and there is less vibration of the machine than other similar lightweight machines. That’s a nice advantage as well. It’s certainly a smooth running machine

    Cons of Brother CS5055PRW
There seems to be some issue with the tension as the thread breaks often. My friend used low quality thread with her daughter but I actually used pretty nice thread and I had absolutely no issues.

If not used properly, the bottom bobbin has a tendency to get jammed.

    Conclusion

This is a good machine for a beginner or a gift for a teenager. It is cheap, lightweight and quiet. It’s probably the BEST option for a learner or a novice but an expert would NOT be that impressed with this machine.

It just is a great machine for anyone to actually enjoy the art and craft of sewing.
